Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union
Presentation of the conference
European Parliamentary Week, organised jointly by the European Parliament, the French National Assembly and the French Senate, will be held at the European Parliament on 15 and 16 March 2022.
Instituted in February 2012 by the Economic and Monetary Affairs, Employment and Social Affairs, and Budgets Committees of the European Parliament with the assent of the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, to debate the European framework of national budgetary decisions and European economic governance, which underwent a profound transformation in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, since January 2014 this event has also included the Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union.
This conference has its origins in article 13 of the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union of 2 March 2012, which provides for the European Parliament and national parliaments to debate budgetary policies and other matters governed by the Treaty.
According to its Rules of Procedure, the conference provides a framework for an exchange of information and best practices in implementing the Treaty’s provisions, designed to strengthen cooperation between national parliaments and the European Parliament. It aims to ensure democratic accountability in the area of economic governance and budgetary policy in the EU, taking social aspects into consideration and without prejudice to the powers of national parliaments.
The Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union is thus a key moment in democratic scrutiny of Europe’s major economic and budgetary choices and offers an appropriate setting in which to debate common economic and financial challenges.
